The Guest House located 20m from Katature beach, at the end of Abimanagama Road, it has no sign but is the house closest to the beach with an elephant and rice on the door post, coloured roof lights ant night. Sriyani runs the Kavishka Batik shop on the beach so best to meet there. You can also walk from Gurubebila beach to the left if you are facing the sea.
You can walk along the beach path left of Gurubebila or down Abimanagama Road. The turning is by the pottery shops on the main Matara beach road, just south of the Barbarian Road if you are heading towards Weligama.
Abimanagama Road is located at the junction of the Weligama Bypass road (AB41) and Matara Road (A2). There is a row of shops selling pots by this road and it is also signposted to Cape Weligama 5* Hotel (not the Jungle beach road). Also on the other side is “Barbarian Hotel road” is next to Abimanagama Road
A Tuk Tuk from Weligama Station about 300 Rupees will take you most of the way and to the top of the hill but then the road turns into a dirt track you have to walk 200m and then back on a concrete road on a steep hill to the beach. You need to take the dirt track that heads straight down, slighty to the right not the one that bends to the left. This will take you to the beach. The guest house is in the two buildings just before.
Bring a good torch for night walks across the beach and for the 100m of no street lights at the beginning of the dirt track.
The beach a great private swimming beach about 200m wide, with couple of sun loungers and two batik shops in each corner selling a range of light weight sarongs, dresses, shirts and carved souvenirs. Chances are you will have the beach to yourself although you may have to share with the occasional guest from the Barbarian Ayurvedic or Cape Weligama Resorts either side.
Ketature beach is good for swimming, in the middle, take care of currents and shallow reef on either side.
Surfing Ketature Beach
On a glassy day it is possible to surf just left of Kaviska Batik shop if the swell is over 4ft, about a 100m ride and a very shallow reef to exit. OK if you staying or passing though on a SUP but we wouldn’t recommend it for a day out.
Jungle Beach (aka Red Rock beach) on the left has two great reef right and left breaks. It can be shallow, especial when the wave sucks up to the reef so take care for your ability.
See you soon! x
