Our base in Gurubebila Village
Surf South Sri Lanka HQ is based in rural Gurubebila Village between Midigama and Weligama, in the south west of Sri Lanka. It’s a quiet village with a great surf culture, you get really get to hang local. Catch some fish for the BBQ, join the cricket team, or relax with a Lion beer and watch another epic sunset. It is a perfect location for you to get to many of the best southern surf points and without the package tourist crowds and the noise of the main A2 road.
Gurubebila beach hosts two local surf breaks Plantation Point and Coconut Point. Clean waves hold to 6ft on a good day, classic A-frame with peeling left and right from a reef point break, 450m rides. The Midigama-Weligama area caters for all surfing abilities, with a 2km beginners Beach Break only 3km away and Lazy Left and Jungle Beach intermediate reefs in walking distance. Some lovely drone footage of, Gurubebila local hero Anil Benjo surfing Coconuts. Massive credit to ML★ for this!
When to come?
The official peak surf season in the south-west, around Weligama, is from the end of October to early April. Winds are offshore making clean waves, swells are consistently good and rain is at a minimum. The season then shifts up the south east coast towards Arugum Bay from April. Outside the official surfing season you still get some fantastic days in the water. For beginners Weligama is perfect all year round for learning to surf. For luxury accommodation always advisable to book early, especially over Christmas & New Year, for the rest we will most probably be able to find you something, there are some great new and revamped places for 2018.
